Divorce Begins with Remarriage - Chapter 33
Berenice seemed to find hope in this dark situation. If she didn’t have a suitable dress, she was really going to have to marry in that yellow dress. What a relief.
Who owns the dress.
Why it remains new.
None of that mattered.
What’s important now is whether she can wear that dress for the wedding.
“I hope it fits.”
Berenice said with a slightly excited voice.
“We might be able to stall for time to get it altered, Berenice.”
“How so?”
Roberto, who’s offering solutions so gently, seemed like a god to Berenice. In this crisis, Roberto’s calm response was reassuring.
Roberto must have found the best solution for Berenice again.
“We have an orchestra for the wedding. I’ve asked them to take some additional payment and delay the ceremony for a bit. Fortunately, the conductor happily agreed.”
See.
Berenice bit her lip.
She felt warmth returning to her body that had gone cold. It’s fortunate. Really, she was fortunate because of him.
“…So everything’s resolved?”
“It seems so for now. Berenice, are you okay?”
“I am okay. You’ve resolved everything on my behalf, Roberto. I really am okay. Ah, I feel like I can breathe now.”
Berenice took a deep breath. Roberto watched her intently. He saw color return to Berenice’s pale face and she steadied herself.
And only after he was sure Berenice was truly okay did Roberto stand up.
“But why do we have a new dress?”
Now that everything was resolved, her curiosity arose. Berenice asked lightly.
But Roberto’s expression darkened at that light question. Before he could answer, the maid who had been sent on an errand came in with another wedding dress, beautifully packaged.
The maids quickly unfolded the dress. It wasn’t a design that was currently in fashion but it was modest and dignified. Perhaps it could be called a classic style that doesn’t go out of fashion.
As the maids checked the condition of the dress, Roberto slowly opened his lips.
“It belongs to my older sister.”
“Your older sister?”
She heard there was a daughter in the Cyrilov family. But she didn’t know the details. Roberto turned to Berenice, who looked puzzled.
“I will tell you the rest of the story after the ceremony. For now, you need to get ready, Berenice.”
“Ah, right.”
“I’ll be dealing with the guests outside.”
“…Roberto.”
When Roberto was about to leave the room, Berenice cautiously held him back. Roberto turned his head toward the hand that held him.
“…I’m sorry, and thank you.”
Berenice spoke sincerely. Roberto smiled gently and shook his head.
“If you’re okay, then I’m okay too.”
Such sweet words.
Berenice let go of Roberto. After Roberto left the room, Berenice tried on the dress. Selphine and the maids fussed around her.
“Hmm, it’s a bit long, but other than that, it’s fine. The back is a bit loose and it’s quite a low-cut. We’ll probably need to cover it with lace.”
“…a relief from misery.”
Berenice breathed a sigh of relief. This dress was her last hope, and if it hadn’t fit, it would take a long time before they could find another. People skilled in sewing gathered to adjust the dress to Berenice’s size.
And just when they were about to take off the dress to start the alterations,
Another stroke of luck arrived.
It was Madame Stove.
“Oh my. I heard there was a mishap, so I hurried over after wrapping up my work, and fortunately, you have a dress. I came to see if any other dresses could be altered, Miss.”
“…Madame, thank you so much for coming. But today’s events…”
“Of course, we’ll keep it confidential. No one will know about this incident.”
Madame Stove smiled brightly. She handed over her coat to the maids and rolled up her sleeves. It was easy for her to come since she hadn’t scheduled any appointments for the afternoon to attend Berenice’s wedding.
Madame Stove took pins, needles, and thread from the maids with eyes full of passion.
“Don’t worry, Miss. I’ll make you even more beautiful.”
“We only have about two hours left.”
“One hour will be enough. Do you think we only have a few hands here? Trust in my abilities, Miss.”
And Madame Stove proved her skills perfectly.
Even the dresses they thought would be beyond repair became good materials. She took off the jewels from those dresses and attached them to Berenice’s dress, sewing them according to the seam lines. And she completely cut off the slightly excessive shoulder parts and made new shoulder straps by connecting beads from the torn dresses.
The original design didn’t include a veil, but she made one that could be worn like a hat by detaching the lace from the damaged dresses and intertwining it with fresh flowers. Berenice styled her hair up to match the new dress design.
Was that all? The dress was embroidered with bright white corsages and bead decorations, and lace was added at the hem.
The loose back was boldly cut off and overlaid with lace for a new sewing. The possibly empty waist was filled with a white leather belt that Berenice had. A leather belt studded with pearls accentuated Berenice’s waistline even more.
Without the efforts of Madame Stove and the maids present there, this would have been impossible.
Just as Madame Stove promised, she worked a miracle in just an hour.
Madame Stove smiled brightly, wiping the sweat from her forehead.
“Now let’s go hold your wedding ceremony, Miss.”
The melody of the orchestra could be heard outside. Roberto seemed to be doing a great job entertaining the guests as he had said. Berenice took a deep breath and nodded.
“Thank you, everyone. I won’t forget this kindness.”
Of course, she also intended not to forget her grievances.
***
Berenice and Roberto’s wedding ceremony was held.
People were captivated by the new form of wedding dress. It added charm to an elegant and classical beauty.
Moreover, the unique bridal veil designed by the designer, the lace embroidery covering the back, and even the waist belt were sure to be talked about among noble ladies for a long time.
In the midst of everyone’s admiration, there was one person grinding his teeth.
‘No one could do their job properly!’
Naturally, it was Livio Cornell. He had boldly taken a seat at an event he wasn’t invited to, hoping to see Berenice’s downfall. But Berenice was attending her wedding ceremony in a perfectly fine dress.
Livio’s gloomy gaze followed Berenice.
He strangely felt thirsty whenever he looked at Berenice.
Non-alcoholic wine was available at the wedding tables. Forgetting his dignity, Livio loosened his necktie and poured himself a full glass of wine.
Yet his persistent gaze continued to follow Berenice until the end.
***
“Ha.”
Berenice was grateful that the wedding, which had its share of troubles, ended safely.
She would be leaving for the Cyrilov estate tomorrow.
“You’ve worked hard.”
“You too, Selphine. Make sure to give consolation money to everyone who worked hard today.”
“They will all like that.”
Berenice nodded.
If there had been more time, she would have thought of a more appropriate reward, but since she had to leave tomorrow, that was all she could prepare.
Berenice touched her bare face with her fingers, her bridal makeup slightly removed.
‘I’m married.’
She had truly become Berenice Cyrilov.
Even until her divorce from Livio, she had vowed dozens of times never to marry again, but it was all in vain. It hadn’t been long since Berenice had stamped her divorce papers that she tied the knot with Roberto.
But that doesn’t mean she regrets it now.
Berenice ran her fingers through her hair and flopped down on the bed. Roberto was still spending time with the guests outside. Usually, the bride, oppressed by the glamorous but uncomfortable dress, would retire early from the wedding reception, while the groom had to stay till late.
‘He should rest soon.’
We have a long journey tomorrow.
She felt both excited and strange that Roberto would soon come to this room. When she thought about it, there hadn’t been any proper physical contact between them so far.
‘Is that right?’
Roberto had always maintained boundaries and never once acted rudely towards Berenice. It was natural, but somehow she felt slightly disappointed…
Berenice shook her head.
No way!
‘Anyway.’
Berenice turned over in bed.
Roberto’s expression when he said the dress belonged to his sister wasn’t very good.
“Was there a problem with his sister…”
Looking at the expression on his face, Berenice couldn’t easily ask first. But since Roberto said he would tell her later, she hoped he would.
The wine she had drunk before washing up seemed to be taking effect since she felt sleepy.
“Yaaawn…”
Berenice wiped the tears that had gathered at the corner of her eyes and burrowed into the blanket.
She couldn’t wait for Roberto any longer as her eyelids were getting heavy.
