Divorce Begins with Remarriage - Chapter 6
Berenice got up, tired of the same old argument. She didn’t want to sit across from Livio anymore.
“I hope you won’t demand to meet me through someone else anymore. I’m leaving now.”
“Then why don’t we meet in person next time?”
Ah, he hadn’t listened to a word she said all this time.
Berenice blamed herself for finally realizing that her conversation with a man named Livio Cornell was completely useless.
“I’m leaving now. Don’t contact me anymore.”
When Berenice tried to pass Livio again, he grabbed her arm. She looked at him with a cold gaze.
“I’ll scream.”
“I’ll let go if you promise to meet again.”
“I’m warning you that I’ll scream.”
“You’re an elegant woman. You wouldn’t do that, would you?”
Livio still didn’t understand Berenice at all. She smiled and opened her mouth wide.
“KYAAAAAAH! Help!”
Livio chuckled as he tried to get up in confusion. Come to think of it, there was no way a restaurant with a private room like this would have poor soundproofing.
No one came, and the startled Berenice struggled and flung open the door of the room. Despite her efforts, Livio refused to let go of her wrist and pulled her back, biting her.
“Ah!”
As she tried to escape from the room, Livio grabbed Berenice’s hair. Surprised, she turned her head at the strong pull on her scalp.
Livio was swearing with wild, gleaming eyes.
You, have you really reached this point?
Struggling to get away, Berenice looked outside the room for help. Although there were many waiters in the restaurant, there were no guards willing to intervene in personal matters. And Berenice’s bodyguards were waiting outside with the carriage.
She had been considerate of Serena’s story being overheard by others, but she never expected this. It was foolish of her to risk it all for Serena when she had never been sincere to Berenice even once.
The waiters, knowing that Livio was a noble, exchanged uncertain glances with each other.
“Have you seen enough? Get the fuck out of here!”
Livio snarled at his surroundings, grabbing Berenice by the shoulders and pulling her away.
Berenice’s eyes caught a glimpse of Roberto. He was walking down the hallway and stopped in his tracks, looking in her direction. He stopped and looked in her direction. His gaze seemed to convey an unknown message.
At that moment, Roberto moved. What was thought to be just a passing encounter turned into him approaching Berenice and Livio in a few steps.
“What are you… Ah!”
Livio screamed when his wrist was grabbed. Roberto exerted force, restraining Livio’s twisted arm.
“She said she doesn’t like it.”
“Let go of me! Ah!”
Roberto looked down at Livio, who was trembling and screaming. With trembling hands, Berenice picked up the hat that had fallen to the floor. The veil, trampled by Livio’s feet, looked like her.
Berenice gave up on the hat.
Standing up straight, Berenice slowly adjusted her hair. She untangled her messy hair with her fingers, creating natural curls.
Berenice hid her face in her long hair.
“Now that we are divorced, this is no longer a household matter. Thank you, Lord Cyrilov.”
“No, it’s not right. Even if he calls himself your husband, it’s not right to oppress the weak with violence. I am simply doing what I must do, so you don’t have to take it to heart.”
“Ugh!”
Livio, who had momentarily flinched at the name ‘Cyrilov,’ expressed his anger by twisting his body, but he couldn’t do anything under Roberto’s restraint. Besides, Roberto was from a family that surpassed the Cornell family.
“…Still, thank you. I can’t imagine what would have happened if you weren’t here.”
Berenice calmed her trembling voice with a deep breath. Roberto confirmed that she was unharmed and released Livio, as if pushing him away.
“Son of a bitch!”
As elegant as she was, Berenice’s vulgar curse and the force of her shoe sent Livio tumbling backward. Sparks flew from Livio’s eyes. This humiliation must have been a first for him.
“When someone speaks, you should listen! You’re not a beast!”
Berenice stepped back, breathing heavily. When Livio reached out to grab her ankle, Roberto discreetly stepped on his hand to stop him.
“I hope you won’t do such despicable things again, Mr. Cornell.”
Livio withdrew his hand from under Roberto’s foot and muttered.
“I’ll sue you!”
Livio’s rough touch as he grazed his chin with his pointed shoe was harsh. He winced and gritted his teeth.
Berenice said smugly,
“What did I do?”
For some reason, she felt confident that Roberto would take her side. At least he seemed to be on the side of justice.
“I didn’t see anything. The lady was just standing there quietly.”
Berenice seemed to be indicating that to Livio.
“What? How could you say such a crazy thing when there are so many pairs of eyes here?”
Livio gestured to the waiters, but they turned their heads as if they hadn’t seen anything. They hadn’t reached out to help Berenice in the first place because they didn’t want to get involved in the affairs of the nobles. Only the manager, who was called in late, stopped Livio from causing a commotion, saying that he shouldn’t make a fuss.
In the end, Livio, who didn’t get a response from anyone, gritted his teeth and pointed at Roberto.
“I’m going to sue you, bastard! Do you think you can get away with it just because you’re a duke?”
As Livio was about to say something, Roberto blocked his way. Roberto’s gaze as he looked down at Livio was chilling, as if he were looking at a bug.
“Please leave now, lady. I will escort you wherever you need to go.”
She didn’t expect that. Roberto was much more gentlemanly and just than Livio. She realized that rumors were indeed not to be believed.
Roberto reached out his arm as if to escort Berenice. Berenice hesitated for a moment, then placed her hand on his sturdy arm. Somehow, she had a strong belief that Roberto could protect her from Livio.
“Thank you.”
Roberto and Berenice walked past Livio to the entrance of the restaurant. No one stopped them. Even Livio, who was taken aback by Roberto, couldn’t hold onto Berenice.
Roberto escorted Berenice to the front of the restaurant.
Roberto wrinkled his nose. The familiar smell kept lingering around his nostrils. Unable to bear it, Roberto asked cautiously.
“Lady Dante. Are you injured? I think I smell blood.”
“Ah…”
After removing her arm from Roberto’s, Berenice took a breath and checked her body. In fact, she seemed too surprised to know where she was hurt.
She could see a small, bloody wound around her eye. Ouch. It hurts to see. Berenice pressed the wound firmly with her palm.
“Your elbow got lightly scratched.”
It seemed like it was scratched during the scuffle earlier. Roberto said after carefully examining Berenice’s wound.
“It would be better for you to have an escort and report it to the guards.”
“My escort knights are waiting outside. But as for suing… they probably won’t be able to do anything about it.”
Berenice expressed her hesitation.
Livio is a noble. Berenice is also a noble, but she is a woman, and her family is lower in rank than Livio’s. Even if Berenice sued, it was obvious that the guards would make more effort to reach an amicable agreement between the two than to punish Livio.
In the end, she would have to look at Livio’s face unnecessarily.
In response to Berenice’s words, Roberto advised in a low voice.
“Lady Dante should receive treatment first.”
Berenice nodded.
“Afterwards, if you need it, I will testify for you.”
Berenice looked surprised. Roberto is a duke. Even the security guards wouldn’t dare to ignore his words.
“Have we met before, by any chance?”
At Berenice’s sudden question, Roberto shook his head.
“No, we haven’t.”
“Then why are you being so kind?”
“…I couldn’t bear to see injustice. No matter the reason, it’s not right for a strong man to assault a delicate woman.”
Is this justice based on chivalry? Berenice asked him without knowing what she wanted to confirm.
“Even if he said it was a family matter?”
Even if Livio harassed Berenice, once he claimed it was a family matter, most people hesitated to intervene. Some even seemed to blame Berenice for the trouble he caused.
But Roberto disagreed.
“Even if it truly is a family matter. Besides, the lady and he are no longer family, so it can’t still be considered a family matter, don’t you think?”
