“Pardon?”
For a moment, it felt like the heavy atmosphere had completely shattered.
My complicated thoughts were also cleared by that one statement from Calix.
“You’ve saved me from near death several times and even revived me when I was dead, so if you’re not a fairy, what else could you be?”
“Your Highness, I didn’t revive you when you were dead,”
“Enough. Fairy or human, all you need to do is assist me until I become emperor. Understood?”
He seemed to realize that his statement was unreasonable, as his face turned bright red and he covered it with his large hands.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
We were so serious just a moment ago, and now he’s calling me a fairy.
“I understand, Your Highness.”
“Let’s end this topic here and get some sleep. It will take quite a while to reach the capital.”
***
Now that it was revealed that I hadn’t saved Calix solely with my own power, I couldn’t treat him the same as before.
No matter how much he said he would let my identity slide, how could I act normally?
‘But, wait a minute. Couldn’t I just say I’m really a fairy?’
For a moment, a strange idea crossed my mind, but I quickly dismissed it.
Where in the world would you find such a large fairy?
Whether he understood my complicated feelings or not, Calix continued to make unnecessary conversation with me.
“You seem to quite like Desart.”
“Yes, Your Highness. The food seems to be quite delicious.”
We would be able to reach the capital by evening.
It was about 3 days before the original expected arrival of the delegation we had parted ways with.
It was a long time if you considered it long, and a short time if you considered it short.
If Ruel hadn’t taken a detour to look for Calix, we could have arrived at the promised time, but that possibility seemed very low. There’s no way Ruel would have left without Calix, who was kidnapped right before his eyes.
“Food? Posnia would have more variety, wouldn’t it?”
I almost frowned at his words.
‘That’s just your opinion.’
Posnian food was generally Western-style.
For a 21st-century palate that had tasted various foods from around the world, the variety was too monotonous.
Still, as expected of a crown prince, such unconscious patriotism! I inwardly applauded him.
He truly has the makings of a monarch.
“Personally, I liked it because it was a new taste.”
Calix glanced at me, seemed to ponder something for a while, and then spoke.
“When we return, tell the chef to diversify the menu.”
“Pardon?”
“Tell him to increase the variety of food served to the staff.”
I was impressed by Calix’s words. Is he finally thinking about improving internal affairs? Raising the quality of food to win the hearts of the Crown Prince’s palace staff?
“What a brilliant idea, Your Highness!”
At my words, Calix turned his head to look out the window, seeming a bit embarrassed.
I thought I saw the corner of his mouth twitch.
This guy, being shy.
With the current absence of the head maid, reorganizing the personnel in the Crown Prince’s palace was urgent.
“Ah, Your Highness. Since we’re on the topic…”
Of course, Calix must have been concerned about this too, which is why he brought up the chef.
“Speak.”
“About the Crown Prince’s palace. What are your plans?”
To my question, Calix replied nonchalantly.
“Don’t you already have ideas about it?”
I was a bit taken aback. Is he really giving me authority so recklessly?
Was what he just said to me sincere?
“Your Highness, if I may be so bold, I don’t think it’s a good choice to hand over power so generously.”
“Then should I continue to doubt you? Is that what you want?”
I quickly shook my head.
“Of course not, Your Highness.”
“Then manage it as you see fit.”
Calix smiled slightly. What on earth is he trying to do?
Is he really planning to trust me completely? I quietly tried to think from Calix’s perspective.
First, I prevented him from drinking poisoned wine.
Second, I took an arrow meant for Calix.
Third, I saved Calix from a poisoned arrow using the diary.
Fourth, I saved Calix from drowning using CPR.
At this point, I could understand Calix’s feelings.
‘I guess I’ve done quite a lot, haven’t I?’
It seemed I could have some confidence.
“Then, as soon as we return, I’ll draft and submit a reorganization plan, Your Highness.”
***
The capital of Desart was as splendid as one would expect of a capital.
Dazzling marble buildings comparable to Posnia and relatively clean streets.
“Follow me quietly.”
Calix led me into a small alley on the outskirts of the bustling area.
As we went deeper, a row of slightly shabby, faded buildings appeared.
“It’s a mercenary guild.”
At Calix’s words, I swallowed hard and tried to memorize the path.
If he gets formally invited to the banquet, I’ll have more personal time. That’s when I need to find a magician and ask about the diary.
“It would be troublesome if rumors spread about us posing as a couple in the capital, so let’s cover up for now.”
He said, putting a robe on me that he had prepared somehow.
“From now on, you’re my lady, and I’m your guard.”
“Pardon?”
I frowned at Calix’s absurd situation setting and looked at him.
“Wouldn’t it be a bit unrealistic for you to be my guard?”
Calix looked me up and down disapprovingly at my reaction.
He wasn’t wrong.
“But, if that’s the case, I’d have to speak down to you…”
“So. You don’t like it? From what I’ve seen, you seem to quite enjoy these role-plays.”
Calix grinned mischievously. Since it wasn’t untrue, I flinched unnecessarily.
“When have I ever done that, Your Highness.”
“You think I didn’t notice you chuckling while teasing me?”
Even as Calix said this, he was giggling, finding something amusing.
“Anyway, you’re the daughter of a merchant guild master, and I’m a knight tasked with escorting you to Posnia. Understood?”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
“You should answer, ‘Yes, Sir.’ like this.”
I looked at Calix with salty eyes.
He seemed to be enjoying this role-play quite a bit.
“…Yes, Sir.”
Calix moved close to me as if escorting me and headed into the building.
Unlike the city center and wealthy areas, the interior was a bit shabby, but still lively.
“Oh! Everyone, hush! We have guests!”
As soon as we entered, a muscular man with white hair, looking to be in his late forties, staggered towards us with a glass of alcohol.
“What brings you here for a request?”
The man, with a reddened nose and reeking of alcohol, thrust his face towards Calix.
Calix frowned as if annoyed and pointed to a man reading a book in the corner, asking,
“Is that adventurer also part of this guild?”
“…Oh ho. Why are you asking about our Hamilton reading in the corner?”
The man, eyes narrowed slyly, put his hands behind his back and looked Calix up and down.
“State your business.”
“I’d like to borrow that fellow for a moment.”
“Do you know who our Hamilton is to say you want to borrow him?”
Wariness flashed in his narrowed eyes. He crossed his arms and stared at Calix.
Meanwhile, I glanced at the man and noticed something like a military dog tag made of gold thread hanging from his neck.
‘Kakun Hartnet.’
Calix let out a short sigh and leaned in close to the man, whispering,
“I need a magician.”
The man froze at that. He apparently hadn’t expected Calix to know about the magician’s identity.
His eyes, darting towards the bespectacled man called Hamilton, were filled with confusion.
“Haha, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Judging by your attitude, I assume he’s a magician without imperial entry approval.”
Startled by those words, the man hurriedly covered Calix’s mouth with both hands.
“Qu-Quiet! Hamilton is an examiner, an examiner.”
Calix, with an extremely annoyed expression, roughly removed the man’s hands from his mouth and said,
“Then I suppose you wouldn’t mind if I called Desart’s scouts. Alright. I’ll be going now.”
Calix turned around without hesitation, taking me with him.
And after a few steps.
The man called Kakun ran up from behind, grabbed Calix’s clothes, and said,
“W-Wait. What do you need us to do?”
