I'm A Sucker For Extras - Chapter 29
Chapter 29
“Bring her out! Bring her out!”
“Jax?”
Brody and Aidan looked at each other with shocked expressions.
They could have mistaken the voice, but the content was extraordinary. No, just the tone alone made it seem unmistakable.
“Listen, Northern Ice Duke Aidan!”
He must be crazy to shout ‘Northern Ice Duke’ at this time and place.
He stood on the busy street, shouting like a protest, attracting attention with a voice as loud as a whale.
It seemed like he was determined to embarrass Brody and Aidan.
People passing by glanced at the blond man standing in front of the building, propping it up with his back against it and looking up at the window.
“I stand here to tell the world of the heinous deeds of the Northern Duke and seek people’s recognition. He has kidnapped my sister and is holding her here!”
When Jax, with theatrical gestures, started shouting at the crowd, people had completely settled down and started to watch him.
The windows of the inn, where he stared as if performing a serenade, began to open here and there in the commotion.
“Younger sister?”
Brody murmured as she listened to his speech.
Quite audacious.
She tried to stop Aidan from opening the window, but changed her mind.
If she didn’t watch after all this commotion, it would look like she and Aidan were the ones Jax was looking for.
It was not a very big town.
So the innkeeper and the staff were likely to be paying attention to the unusual combination of the imposing man and the peculiar woman who couldn’t leave the room.
Brody stood up, enduring the pain, and grabbed the window, holding it while Aidan supported her.
She exchanged glances with Aidan, took a deep breath for a moment, and then pushed the window.
As the window opened and the expected face appeared, Jax fixed his gaze on that spot.
“It’s them, the Northern Duke, and my sister!”
With his shout, the eyes of the people were sharply focused on them.
Brody leisurely leaned on the window sill, holding her chin, looking around with a puzzled expression.
Receiving the gaze of the people, she asked with a bewildered look, “Me?”
She looked confused, pointing at herself with her index finger, then quickly grabbed the window and looked around several times.
As if to confirm that it was her, he’d called.
Jax raised an eyebrow at the sight.
Why is he doing this? Did he hurt his head?
“Who are you, sir?”
Jax ran a hand through his hair in shock at the title, then remembered what he had to do.
“Brody, oh, is he threatening you? How can you not recognize your own brother?”
“That’s not it.”
Brody pulled the man next to her to the window.
Soon the eyes of the onlookers caught sight of Aidan, with his sharp, observant face, shiny jet-black hair, and gaping muscles that didn’t look like those of a normal man.
Women gasped and covered their mouths when they saw him, and men frowned at the sound.
Anyway, the atmosphere of the man standing by the window didn’t seem like that of an ordinary person.
“Are you talking about my husband, by any chance?”
“….”
The gazes of the women shook with envy or admiration, and the men breathed a sigh of relief.
And Aidan stiffened like a statue.
“Your husband?”
“Yes, we’re on our honeymoon, ah!”
Brody covered her mouth and rolled her eyes.
She seemed to think for a moment, then exclaimed in a bright voice.
“Is this some kind of surprise, honey?”
‘Honey……honey…….
Aidan stood by her side in silence, his mouth still clenched tight. But the blush on his face seemed to speak volumes about his mood.
Their flirtatious mood changed the way people looked at them.
Bystanders no longer looked at the couple in the inn but at the overwhelmed Jax, the man who had screamed his lungs out in the street, with suspicion.
Jax puffed out his chest in embarrassment and busily paid attention to his surroundings.
He pointed at the window in disbelief and shouted.
“What on earth is going on! Did you brainwash my younger sister?! Brody! It’s me! Your brother Jax, Jax McCarthy!”
“Jax McCarthy…?”
People started buzzing again with this new information.
The Duke, known as ‘Jax McCarthy’, was famous among the imperial citizens. He was a brave and righteous knight, known for not tolerating injustice. Thanks to him and the alliance in the recent war, they managed to repel the Northern Army from the capital.
There were even rumors among the people that he might marry the princess in the future.
And this was the same Jax McCarthy?
“Ha, no way, you’re not saying you’re that Jax McCarthy…”
An old man among the onlookers, quite old, with wrinkles forming an odd pattern, chuckled and asked Jax with a smile.
However, he couldn’t finish his sentence.
Jax looked down at him with a dignified gaze, considering the impolite tone of the question.
“Yes, indeed, I am Jax McCarthy.”
Buzz, buzz. A great commotion arose among the people.
They seemed to be contemplating whether to kneel before this unfamiliar figure with the high position of a ‘Duke,’ as if unsure of how to act.
“Why is Duke McCarthy here?”
But a little kid’s question, thrown with the mischievousness typical of a child, made everyone freeze.
People, initially trembling in fear of authority, soon started to fill the void with curiosity.
“Yeah. Why is the Duke here?”
“He came to find his younger sister.”
“But then, is that person really the Northern Duke? Huh… he looks extraordinary, but the war has just ended. Why is the Duke doing this in the South when the war just ended?”
“What the heck? They claim to be a married couple.”
“Did the Northern Duke get married?”
“No, but wait, did Duke McCarthy have a younger sister?”
Their opinions seemed to gradually lean towards doubting the authenticity of the Duke, ‘Jax McCarthy,’ who was shouting like a play in the square.
“Enough!”
Jax swung his arm vigorously, making his blonde hair flutter, and shouted.
His booming voice instantly silenced the audience.
“I, Jax McCarthy, took pity on the orphan child, Brody May. Therefore, Brody is my only sister, Brody McCarthy! This is a fact that can be easily confirmed by contacting the royal family through the village administration! Are you prepared to answer for the dishonor you have brought upon me by doubting me? Only those who are confident enough to accept my stern duel will be allowed to speak!”
“….”
As he scolded with a confident attitude, people closed their mouths.
Whether Jax’s words were true or not, they calculated that getting involved with this person would only lead to trouble.
The recently defeated Duke is in the South, a big man with a sword who claims to be a noble duke, even making up a sister who never existed.
Why on earth is the Northern Duke in the South, and why is he with Duke McCarthy’s younger sister? Are they eloping?
The woman standing by the window looked at him with an uneasy gaze filled with implications and then leaned against her husband. It was as if she feared she had become the target of a madman.
The husband, embracing his frail and pale wife’s shoulders, reassured her, grabbing the latch of the window and speaking with a deep voice.
“My wife needs some rest. I don’t understand why you are acting like this, sir, but we’ll have to go inside.”
Thunk. The window slammed shut..
Through the closing gap of the window, Brody saw most of the people nodding as if agreeing with the sentiments of the newlyweds.
Once the window was closed, Jack’s shouting whale-like cries echoed again.
“Duke Aidan! You audacious scoundrel! Release my sister! I, the head of the family, have the right to decide where Brody lives! What right do you have to take Brody away from me? If you don’t give her to me, I’ll have her brought before a nobleman’s tribunal to be judged! Come out and face it like a noble!”
Though he seemed a bit worked up, Brody noticed his precise breathing and clear pronunciation. Even though his words were true, the surreal reality made it feel like he was lying.
Closing the window, Aidan barely pushed the words ‘honey, husband, wife’ out of his head, gently tucked Brody into bed, and began to hastily pack.
“Damn, I was hoping you would recover a little more before we moved.”
Brody, who had been wondering if it was true that Jax had enlisted her as his sister, tensed as she realized what Aidan was doing.
Jax’s plan to mobilize people to pressure them had gone awry, and soon he would do something else.
And just like that,
“Brody, come down here! Come back with your brother!”
The orange aura began to swirl around Brody as Jack’s cries continued.
But in no time, Aidan, who had gathered all their belongings, swiftly embraced Brody.
Then, the vivid orange energy dissipated into thin air.
“Brody, it might be tough, but hold on tight.”
He wrapped Brody’s arms around his neck.
At that moment, a loud crash was heard from the stairs.
The screams of the staff and the innkeeper’s frantic voice were drowned out by the resounding noise.
It seemed like no one could properly restrain the giant madman.
Soon, the bolt of the inn room broke off, and the door opened as if about to shatter.
“No one can hide from justice like the sun!”
Jack shouted solemnly, raising his sword with seriousness.
Upon hearing his words, Aidan drew his own sword without a hint of hesitation.
Brody felt a chill as she sensed the magical power trying to invade her, and she clung to Aidan with all her might, even though her body ached from the intense movements.
Brody felt a chill run down her spine and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. A shiver ran down her spine at the sound of his voice in the distance—the man who had manipulated her, threatened her, and tried to kill her.
Anger flared in Aidan’s cold eyes as he felt her normally calm body float away.
Jax finished his calculations quickly when he saw Aidan holding Brody in one arm.
Now was his chance, he thought.
Jax swung his sword heavily as he cast the spell.
Aidan used his ice elemental energy to repel the magic that tried to invade Brody’s body, striking his sword out at an angle and sending it spilling to the side.
Jax tilted, losing his center of gravity, but then quickly righted himself, deflecting the blade’s trajectory.
The tip of the sword was aimed directly at Brody.
