And so Father told me to rest well in my room until the party at the Count’s mansion during my debut…… No, probably for the sake of my body that would likely be beneficial to Father’s business in the future.
That meant I could have my meals alone in my room.
Since dining with others was an extremely energy-consuming affair for me as a Masipacius, I decided to gratefully accept Father’s consideration.
As a result, I was able to have literal healing time until the day of the party at the Count’s mansion.
Exhausted from various matters, I even had my lessons canceled after speaking with Father and truly enjoyed my own time rolling around in bed.
According to Mylene, my face during these two days looked the happiest she had ever seen.
Having spent such a satisfying holiday, I thought I would be able to attend the party at the Count’s mansion in peak condition.
Just as I was about to take a spoonful of my last holiday dinner at home, the garden became noisy.
I thought perhaps they were having a happy family walk time after dinner, but as I was about to put more food in my mouth, today’s commotion seemed somewhat different from usual.
I briefly sent Mylene out of the room and slightly lifted the curtain to look toward the garden.
“Still, that might be difficult……”
Then I saw Father with a troubled expression, a sulking Leila, and three bewildered brothers.
……Can they possibly ask for Leila’s rejection?
With curiosity boiling up from deep within, I quickly lowered myself and rolled up the curtain slightly to create just enough space for one of my eyes to see.
Then I listened carefully to the sounds coming from outside.
“Father, rather than Rowenloa, what if we take Leila instead……”
Father shook his head at Brother Bershua’s words.
Seeing that they were talking about taking Leila instead of me, it seemed they were discussing tomorrow’s party at the Count’s mansion.
Father firmly shook his head at those words.
It seemed he didn’t want to miss this precious opportunity to show me off in front of the nobles, especially since I had studied the ancient demon language on my own.
“Rubert, what do you think?”
Father asked Brother Rubert who was standing right beside him.
Brother Rubert seemed to gauge both Leila and Father’s reactions before carefully speaking up.
“I think…… going with Rowenloa is the right choice this time.”
Brother Bershua and Brother Rembro standing nearby grimaced and looked at Brother Rubert.
He seemed to shrink a bit and lowered his gaze to the ground, but soon carefully spoke to Father again.
“Rowenloa just visited the Imperial Palace too. If we take her to this party, the nobles will surely bring up stories about her.”
While the other brothers still looked at Brother Rubert with uncomprehending expressions while standing with one leg crossed, Father seemed to understand why he was saying this, just like I did.
“Dad! Then, what if all of us from the Masipacius family attend the party this time?”
Though Leila then ambitiously proposed this alternative to Father, he ultimately didn’t accept her suggestion either.
“That party has meaning because only a select few attend. It’s significant because within each family, only those who have achieved special merit or are the most likely heir to become the head attend with the current head. If the whole family attended, wouldn’t that damage the meaning of the party?”
Hearing those words, Leila immediately drooped her head with a gloomy expression.
“That’s……”
And somehow Brother Rembro standing beside her also didn’t look pleased.
The eldest Bershua got the chance to attend the party with Father simply for being the firstborn, while the third Rubert and I, the youngest, were chosen for being clever — but the second son Rembro had never been called upon by Father.
He seemed to be feeling doubtful about his position within the Marquis household.
Then Father left due to work, and the first and third brothers left to prepare for tomorrow’s party, leaving only Brother Rembro and Leila in the garden.
“Leila, I’ll head in first too……”
Leila tilted her head at those words.
“You seem quite upset, is something wrong, Brother?”
When Leila carefully asked Rembro, Brother Rembro began lamenting his circumstances to her.
Leila seemed to listen to all of his complaints before gently patting Brother Rembro’s shoulder.
“Brother, think about me. I was only adopted into this Marquis household at almost 16…… and only then started studying.”
“But…… unlike you, despite receiving systematic education since childhood, I’m still the dumbest one in the Marquis household.”
“What do you mean dumb! Even if I had studied as long as you have, Brother, if I were to be compared to Sister Rowenloa right now, I’d probably look like the dumbest person in the world!”
Hearing those words, Rembro lifted his head that had been hanging down to look at Leila.
“I went on a night walk alone with Dad once, and he said Brother Rubert and Sister Rowenloa were naturally gifted people. Those two can study with their natural talents while we should find other strengths that suit us!”
Hearing Leila’s words, Brother Rembro nodded at her, and Leila jumped up from the bench, grabbed his hand and suggested they continue their walk before heading in.
Just hearing those comforting words to Brother Rembro, Leila seems like such a good person.
And I want to believe until the end that Leila was truly a good person.
As they moved away from the building, I could no longer hear their conversation, and I finished my meal and enjoyed my last holiday.
Then while I was rolling around in bed again after eating, Mylene seemed to knock and enter, followed by the Marquis household maids coming into my room carrying loads of clothes.
“……What is this?”
“We need to choose your dress for tomorrow’s party!”
Mylene’s face was much more excited than mine, the actual party attendee.
As I blinked at the endless parade of clothes coming in, Mylene gestured to them, and they quickly brought in a mobile partition from outside, set it up around me, and promptly stripped off my nightgown.
“S……save me……”
Hearing my pitiful voice, Mylene spoke with determination.
“I will take responsibility for Miss’s first party.”
No……
Why are you so fired up……
Dresses came in behind the partition, I was made to try them on, and other maids and Mylene repeatedly wrote down their impressions of the dresses.
When the dress selection process finally ended and I, completely exhausted, tried to lie down on the bed, Mylene and the other maids put their selected dress on me again and led me to the vanity.
Please save me……
In the end, I sat at the vanity and discussed for a long time about what lip color would match this dress, what hairstyle would work, and what accessories would be good.
Or more accurately, they discussed among themselves with me in front of them.
I just nodded mindlessly to whatever they asked me.
As they kept talking among themselves and I kept nodding to their questions, suddenly a doubt arose.
……How did Mylene recruit them?
Were there maids in this Marquis household who were this devoted to me?
For the first time after just continuously nodding, I opened my mouth toward them.
“But these don’t seem like faces I see often, except for Mylene……”
Hearing those words, Mylene and the maids made an ‘oops’ expression.
“Ah, I apologize, Miss. This is Millie who has worked at the Marquis household for 2 years, and this is Bella who has worked here for almost 4 years.”
After Mylene’s introduction, Millie and Bella bowed deeply to me.
I returned their greeting with a smile and a slight nod of my head.
“When they saw me carrying loads of dresses that I had requested from the boutique, they and the other maids who brought dresses to your room earlier approached me first saying they wanted to help.”
Mylene seemed very pleased that I, who was usually overlooked in the Marquis household, was now receiving attention from the household staff.
“We heard about how you prevented the head maid…… no, Mollin from being fired……”
“It was really touching……”
I gave them an awkward smile.
Since I don’t usually smile much like Leila or particularly converse with the household staff, they probably thought of me as quite a stiff and aloof young lady of the Marquis family.
It seemed preventing Mollin’s dismissal had helped somewhat in changing my impression among the household staff.
Though it was just an action taken to remove Mollin from the head maid position, it felt like I had gained an unintended benefit.
“Thank you, I look forward to working with you.”
Hearing those words, Millie and Bella exclaimed “We look forward to working with you!” while bowing to me again.
After finishing their greetings, they started discussing among themselves again about what hairstyle and accessories would suit me best.
Only after being held captive by them for nearly 3 hours was I finally able to wash up and lie in bed.
And so my beautiful and brilliant final holiday came to an end as the next morning arrived.
