I visited the Mental Care Center today.
Though the Center Director was irritating, I tolerated it and received my care. My depression hadn’t improved, but the tumultuous emotions that had been plaguing me had settled into something more manageable. I took that as a good sign.
When the Director asked about any recent changes, I had nothing significant to report. These past few days, I’d simply focused on feeding the human at regular intervals without antagonizing it.
There’s a saying that feeding is the quickest way to befriend an animal. True enough, my consistent feeding schedule had helped the human grow more comfortable with me. Despite being naturally cautious, it showed some capacity for learning – becoming quite active when it saw me, preparing itself for mealtimes.
Lately, the human had begun exploring its cage whenever I wasn’t around. Yet watching it struggle through the knee-deep sawdust made me realize how tedious its environment must be.
Perhaps it needed a new habitat. As I pondered what kind of environment would suit it best, I found myself so absorbed in thought that the Director’s words barely registered.

I purchased a new cage for the human and furnished its interior.
During my preparations, I studied Earth’s environment and understood why it was perfect for such delicate life forms. The Union would certainly take interest once development progressed further.
In the new enclosure, I planted pet-friendly grass, flowers, and trees. I mounted an artificial sun on the ceiling, and noting the human’s preference for darkness during sleep, I programmed it to mimic Earth’s day-night cycle. A small pond adorned the center, with walking paths winding throughout.
While the human slept, I relocated its dwelling to the new cage. Though initially tense in its original shelter, it gradually ventured out after observing my calm presence.
There was something endearing about how it emerged, moving with the caution of someone taking their first steps. When it touched the carefully prepared ground – soil and grass free of any sharp stones – its expression was unreadable. I couldn’t determine whether it approved.
Upon fully emerging and surveying its surroundings, the human began to cry.
I wondered if I had made a mistake. The crying continued for some time, leaving me puzzled by its reaction.
Five hours later, watching it stroll contentedly along the paths I’d created, I realized those had been tears of happiness.

While the human slept, I moved the cage to the small room adjoining my bedroom. Though tempted to place it directly in my bedroom, I decided against it, concerned that my constant presence might be intimidating.
The arrangement worked well enough – I could still see through both the room and cage clearly. Having the ability to check on it whenever I wanted was both convenient and satisfying.
I spent the entire day observing the human.
The diverse environment had notably altered its behavior.
Most striking was that the human had begun bathing, maintaining a remarkably consistent and thorough routine.
I felt remorse for having previously misjudged humans as inherently unclean creatures. While they might soil easily, they were perfectly capable of maintaining their hygiene.

After installing the artificial sun, the human fell into a natural rhythm, waking at sunrise and sleeping at sunset. Though the cage environment was perfectly maintained, it would occasionally scoop water from the pond to give to the flowers and trees.
I pondered its behavior. Was it trying to grow its own food? Perhaps displaying some innate environmental tendencies? Or could it be marking its territory?
I couldn’t quite figure it out.

I presented the human with a miniature landscaping set, complete with a watering can. Rather than showing the excitement I’d expected, it just heaved deep sighs at the sight of it.
+
The human has started using the miniature landscaping set. It waters the plants and prunes the tree branches. Though the plants require no additional care, I find its actions both unnecessary and charming.

Recently, the human began weaving leaves together to cover itself. Curious if this was some form of self-decoration, I consulted Ezel, who was shocked to learn I hadn’t provided it with any clothing.
It turned out humans were intelligent enough to create and wear their own clothes. That explained why it had been so desperate to cover itself whenever I looked its way.
I discovered that human supply shops operated through underground channels, as keeping humans as pets was illegal. Ezel granted me access to their shopping site.
The selection was impressive. The items were far more sophisticated than the miniature substitutes I’d been buying. Some were imported directly from Earth, while others were crafted by pet humans themselves.
I’d underestimated them, thinking humans were primitive, low-intelligence creatures. Their capabilities and development level exceeded my expectations.
Though when I compared my human to others, looking at its crudely fashioned leaf-clothes, it seemed less skilled. Its generally slow behavior didn’t help either…
But what could I do? Even if it wasn’t the most capable, I’d committed to raising it.
The shop offered many attractive clothing options suitable for humans. Unsure of its preferences, I ordered just one piece – a white dress that would complement its fair, clean skin while allowing comfortable movement.

All my ordered items had arrived.
When I presented the human with the assembled house, it approached cautiously before venturing inside. It completely ignored the previous house I had given it. Perhaps it hadn’t liked the original house all along…
To my surprise, the human efficiently set everything up, bathed in the bathroom, and stored the food in the refrigerator. It seemed more intelligent than I had anticipated. What a relief.
+
I retract my statement about its intelligence.
The books remain untouched. To be precise, it barely glanced at them once or twice before shutting them with obvious distaste. I had heard that intelligent humans were avid readers, but this one appeared to be rather simple-minded.

The human still refuses to wear the clothes I purchased. Wondering if it might be too slow to understand how to dress itself, I decided to help put the clothes on.
But since it remained fearful of me, I knew I needed to successfully handle it first.
My previous attempts to lure it with food in my hand had failed repeatedly, so I opted for a direct approach and decided to pick it up.
When I carefully lifted the human onto my palm, it immediately tried to scramble down. As I raised my hand higher to prevent its escape, it began trembling violently and clutched my hand tightly.
Heights seemed to frighten it. When it started crying, I lowered my hand, and to my surprise, it remained still instead of fleeing. Perhaps I could consider this a partial success?
