The sl*ve from a conquered nation, kept in place of a dead dog, would sometimes watch the princess with eyes that held something dangerous.
“This is a problem. I’ve kept a dog before, but I’ve never kept a person.”
“The same as with a dog. Give me a name, feed me, and tame me.”
“……”
“So I don’t bite through my owner’s neck.”
Astrina treated him harshly at every turn, convinced he was the crown prince’s spy.
“Call me Master. Act like a proper dog.”
Then, at last, when trust and affection had taken root, Astrina cut the leash of the dog she had been keeping.
Why hadn’t she seen it.
The moment the leash was cut, he was no longer a dog on a lead,
and therefore had no reason left to obey his owner’s words.
Before time could even wear the memories away, he came back to Astrina’s side.
“Try calling me Master. The way I once did for you.”
With a purpose that was anything but innocent.
