“…!”
The emperor’s fatal weakness?
He knew about that too?!
My heart pounded as if it might burst from my chest.
Rumble— The pitch-black sky roared with a strange, menacing sound, as if it would devour the world.
That terrifying sight was blanketing the entire empire of Rilt.
How terrified must the citizens be, completely unaware of what was happening?
Thinking of their fear made my head spin.
The emperor was far more horrifying than I had ever imagined.
I had thought him a tyrant, but he was a demon—no, a calamity.
The emperor’s grotesque voice once again filled the world.
“A fatal weakness? There’s no way you could know that. Go ahead, kill me if you can, Alec. But before you do, you’ll disappear from this world without a trace.”
“Your heart. If I find it and cut it out, won’t you die?”
“…”
Suddenly, the figure in the sky fell silent.
It seemed Alec’s words had hit their mark.
The emperor’s eyes, which had been fixed on Alec, now swept over the ground below.
“It doesn’t matter. Before you lay a finger on me, I will consume this world. Everyone here dies today.”
“Even until the end, you consider human lives less than ants.”
Alec clicked his tongue, his voice low with disdain.
I glared at the emperor, filled with hatred and contempt.
Even if we died at his hands, he would never break our spirits.
“Why are you doing this?”
Without realizing it, I shouted, my voice sharp.
“What do you gain from all this? Do you enjoy seeing people suffer? Do you want to be the last one standing?”
“…”
The emperor’s gaze shifted to me.
The dark clouds above seemed to tremble in anger, rumbling loudly.
Then, a voice, even more immense than the thunder, echoed from the sky.
“I was always alone anyway. So kneel before my power and despair. I will make everyone understand how great and fearsome I am.”
So that was it?
He just wanted to rule the world at his whim?
Rain started to drip down my face.
The black sky grew darker, and even the faint moonlight was completely swallowed up.
Darkness filled the world, making it impossible to see even a step ahead.
The sound of rain pouring down, clouds twisting as if they might collapse, and sharp winds tearing through the air, all filled my ears.
It was like witnessing the end of the world.
Suddenly, faces of my family flashed through my mind.
Eloise, my mother-in-law, and Prince Ridit, along with the servants—were they all safe?
I hoped they weren’t too scared by this sight.
I wished I could have been with them…
“Sir Cassdain.”
Alec’s low voice called out to someone, and suddenly a flash of light appeared.
The one called Cassdain began to glow, his entire body radiating light as he ascended into the sky.
His sword emitted a strange, mystical glow, which then illuminated Alec.
A brilliant blue light began to emanate from Alec as well.
“…Alec.”
I clasped my hands tightly together.
A cold chill ran down my skin.
A deafening roar shook the sky, and the clouds, now swirling into a vortex, grew darker and darker, as something ominous gathered within.
“What… what is that?”
“The emperor’s power,” Olivia answered.
Then, without hesitation, Olivia spoke again.
“We must move to safety.”
Before I could even respond, Olivia grabbed me and we moved swiftly to another location.
Though we had gained some distance from the emperor, we were still well within his sight.
Suddenly, Alec shot up into the sky.
He stepped on something, pushing himself higher and higher.
I was captivated by the sight, unable to tear my eyes away.
“If he finds the emperor’s heart… he can kill him?”
But where could it be?
I had no idea.
I tried to look for the emperor’s body, the one whose head had been severed earlier, but the darkness made it impossible to see.
He hadn’t stabbed the heart, so was that body truly dead?
I gasped as I looked back up at the sky.
Something shot out from between the clouds, reaching for Alec.
But Alec leaped over it and started climbing higher toward the vortex once again. If not for the soft blue light emanating from him, I wouldn’t have been able to see where he was.
The emperor launched repeated attacks, but Alec was too fast for any of them to even graze him.
Eventually, Alec stood face to face with the emperor’s form.
In the brief moment their eyes met, Alec didn’t hesitate—he raised his sword and charged.
*Slash! Slash! Slash!*
It was impossible to count how many times the sword struck; the speed was overwhelming.
The emperor’s form distorted only after Alec’s sword had already passed through it multiple times.
With a crooked smile, the emperor spoke, his lips tilting.
“Hahaha. I told you, it’s useless, Alec.”
But Alec pressed further, pushing through the emperor’s form as if searching for his heart.
Meanwhile, the magic swirling at the center of the vortex had grown much larger and darker than before.
Was he planning to unleash it all at once?
“My heart is in a place you will never find,” the emperor taunted.
“…”
The man we had once known as the emperor of our empire was truly a monster.
I could almost hear the collective sigh of despair from across the empire.
“You’ll never figure it out. No one can kill me.”
“No, Alec knows,” I murmured softly, my voice full of hope.
Alec had known where to find Prince Ridit and how to reach Wiltsbrook Castle. He had known things that seemed impossible.
He had saved our new home, protected my family and me on multiple occasions. He would definitely find the emperor’s heart and destroy it.
Despite the storm raging around me, I stood firm, watching Alec without wavering.
Just then, the swirling clouds, so fierce moments ago, suddenly froze.
“Now, disappear. All of you—die!”
The emperor’s roar made time seem to slow to a crawl.
His magic expanded in an instant, spreading like a dark curtain.
Birds caught in the tempest disappeared without a trace the moment they touched the dark barrier.
The deafening noise ringing in my ears became distant and dull. Everything felt unreal.
That magic really did… wipe out life without leaving a single trace.
The emperor’s magic spread so fast that I couldn’t even follow it with my eyes.
It seemed he really could devour the entire world in an instant.
But through that terrifying darkness, a brilliant beam of light suddenly shot down.
It all happened in a blink of an eye.
The light pierced through the emperor’s barrier and struck the ground ahead of it.
I flinched in shock and stumbled backward. Olivia grabbed me and quickly pulled me away.
What was that?
I blinked, but my vision hadn’t yet returned from being overwhelmed by the intense light.
Yet, I knew that pure, radiant light—it was Alec’s power.
At the same time, the emperor’s form froze in place, as if struck by a fatal blow.
The expanding barrier also halted, frozen mid-spread.
What had just happened?
As I held my breath, I heard Alec’s voice.
“You should’ve kept a better eye on your heart.”
“…!”
I turned my head toward the sound, still dazed as though time had stopped.
There, Alec stood, holding something large—a weapon?
What was that? A railgun? Some kind of machine gun?
Where on earth had that come from?!
Below him lay the emperor’s decapitated corpse.
Squinting through the dim light, I saw a hole in the corpse’s chest.
It was the left side, where the heart should be.
The emperor’s severed head, lying on the ground, suddenly turned, and his eyes snapped open.
“…!”
I clapped my hands over my mouth in shock.
That body—wasn’t it dead?
Even with its head severed?
Blood gushed from the emperor’s mouth, but his signature red eyes remained painfully vivid.
“What… you tricked me?”
“If I’d let you know, you’d have tried to run off and guard your heart.”
“You bastard. You’ve always been a thorn in my side.”
“You got complacent, and now you’re paying for it.”
“I should have killed you long ago…”
“…”
Blood dripped from the emperor’s eyes, sharp with rage.
I was too stunned to make a sound.
It seemed the emperor had truly been capable of surviving even after being decapitated. As long as his heart wasn’t pierced, his body could remain alive, no matter how damaged it became.
He must have resorted to this to avoid dying instantly at Alec’s hands.
But now…
Alec had found and destroyed his heart.
The realization made my own heart race uncontrollably, pounding in my chest as if it would explode.
Had I ever felt my heart beat this strongly in my life?
“Goodbye, Aksen.”
“…”
Alec looked down at the emperor’s face.
He aimed the glowing barrel of his weapon right at the emperor’s nose.
In that moment, the whole world seemed to hold its breath. I, too, couldn’t move a single muscle.
It was really happening.
The emperor was really going to die.
Finally, he was going to disappear.
The source of all my misery.
The origin of my suffering.
The scourge of both my world and my husband’s—a curse beyond any description.
I couldn’t afford to miss a single second of this moment. I clenched my fists tightly and kept my eyes wide open, not even daring to blink.
It had only been a few months, a few years of torment for me, but how long had Alec waited for this moment?
He would never forget this sight.
As Alec adjusted his weapon, brilliant magic enveloped him.
Sensing his impending end, the emperor screamed.
“No—!”
Like a bullet, Alec’s magic shot forward, and the emperor’s body vanished completely.
