My Husband was Switched - Chapter 6
“Yawn, my whole body feels stiff.”
Stretching as I got up, I momentarily stopped what I was doing and slowly turned my head. Then, I quickly closed my mouth, which had been yawning, at the sight of the blue eyes staring at me.
I was sure I had been sleeping face down, but somehow, I ended up sleeping on my back. That wasn’t the important part.
“Your… Your Highness? Since when… More importantly, are you alright?!”
“As you can see, I’m perfectly fine.”
“Thank goodness. I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”
I bowed my head deeply. I couldn’t bear to look at him. We had almost been in serious trouble because of me. I intended to help him but ended up being a burden.
Cedric looked at me silently for a moment before raising his hand to place it on my forehead.
“Fortunately, it seems you don’t have a fever. Are you hungry?”
“Hungry…”
I was about to say no when…
Growl.
At the sound of my stomach rumbling, my face turned red. I was so flustered that I forgot he still had his hand on my forehead.
“Please pretend you didn’t hear that.”
I quickly moved away from him and clutched my stomach.
‘Why now of all times! Can’t my stomach be more considerate?’
My stomach, which had never acted without consideration, had betrayed me.
“I’ve already heard quite a bit, but alright.”
Heard quite a bit?
Did I say something strange in my sleep? No matter how hard I tried to remember, nothing came to mind. Except for the image of Cedric leaving me to be with Isabelle.
“We probably have a lot to talk about, so why don’t we continue over a meal?”
I nodded vigorously. I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t even look at his face.
❖ ❖ ❖
“Please have some of this as well.”
I blinked at the plate pushed in front of me while chewing on some meat. Why was he being so nice all of a sudden? It felt unsettling.
“I-I can manage on my own.”
“These are freshly picked fruits. They should be good for your recovery.”
“…Aren’t you going to eat, Your Highness?”
“I’m eating as well.”
Even while eating, he didn’t take his eyes off me. His slightly twisted expression made me tense up.
‘If he has something to say, he should just say it. Why is he staring like that?’
Even without his glaring, I was already having difficulty swallowing my food, and his blatant stare made me lose my appetite entirely.
“Cough.”
Eventually, I felt my throat clog up. As I pounded my chest, Cedric quickly handed me some water.
“You must have been very hungry.”
I gulped down the water and placed the glass back on the table.
“It’s because Your Highness keeps staring at me. If you have something to say, just say it! Stop glaring at me.”
“I have nothing to say.”
“Anyone can see you have something to say.”
Cedric blinked and rested his chin on his hand. He stared at me for a long time, looking as if he was contemplating something.
‘Did I make some mistake?’
If so, that was a good thing. If he got disappointed in me and decided to divorce me, that would be perfect!
My eyes sparkled at the thought. Cedric’s previously relaxed expression quickly hardened.
“It seems you hope I get disappointed in you.”
“…Was it that obvious?”
“Why do you want to divorce me so badly?”
He asked, genuinely curious. From his perspective, my behavior must have been incomprehensible. That was only natural. Becoming the Grand Duchess was not an easy feat.
‘That’s something you’d say if you were going to be with him for life.’
Who could enjoy a marriage knowing their husband would cheat in the future?
“Well, marriage should be with someone you love…”
I stopped mid-sentence, remembering the passionate night we had shared.
“It should be with someone you love, but! Even without love, marriage can happen. I don’t know what kind of deal was made for our marriage, Your Highness, but…”
“But?”
He echoed my words, tapping the table with his finger. His lake-like blue eyes sparkled like a predator eyeing its prey.
“…I-I can’t live in this cold!”
“If that’s the problem, it’s a simple matter to fix. I’ll bring enough magic stones to raise the temperature.”
That’s not what I meant.
“I have no friends and it’s very lonely.”
“If you have friends in the capital, you can invite them. We have plenty of guest rooms and enough food.”
As if I had friends. My only friends were animals. I lamented my narrow social circle.
“…It’s fine.”
“More importantly, why did you try to go into the forest? You seemed to have found something and ran towards it.”
“I thought I saw an animal. I was so surprised… seeing an animal in the snowy forest…”
“Hmm.”
He didn’t seem to believe me. But what could he say when I insisted that was the case?
“Still, it’s dangerous, so please don’t do that again.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
I nodded immediately.
“I won’t do anything dangerous.”
I didn’t mind getting hurt, but I didn’t want to put him in danger.
“There’s one strange thing. I was sure I was injured… but my body is clean.”
“R-Really? That’s strange. Did Your Highness get injured? I was so out of it from the cold that I don’t remember well…”
This was an emergency. He seemed to be questioning his uninjured body. I hastily mumbled and rolled my eyes.
“More importantly, are you really alright, Your Highness?!”
I jumped up and approached him. Grabbing his broad shoulders, I examined his body. I exaggerated my actions and raised my voice.
“Let me see, tell me where it hurts, and I’ll check it for you.”
“……”
“Is it your back?! Or your waist?!”
I checked his back and then patted it a couple of times before grabbing his face.
“Did you tell the physician you hit your head when you fell?!”
Turning his face side to side, I met his blue eyes staring intently at me. I awkwardly removed my hands and laughed.
“You seem fine.”
Then I quickly moved away from him and ran back to my seat.
For a moment, the corner of his mouth twitched. Did I see that wrong? Then he seemed surprised and stood up abruptly.
“I have a lot of work to do, so I’ll leave first.”
That was music to my ears.
“If you have a lot of work, you should go quickly!”
I smiled brightly and waved. Only after Cedric completely left the dining room did I relax and lean back in my chair.
“…I should eat separately. This way, I might choke on my food every time.”
I chewed the remaining meat in my mouth and squinted my eyes. If I wanted to divorce him quickly, I needed to build up my strength.
❖ ❖ ❖
Cedric was troubled.
He had almost laughed at her actions.
“How can she be so cute?”
Who would have thought he’d find his wife, who was trying so hard to divorce him, cute? Strange feelings seemed to be creeping up inside him.
“Maybe there’s really something wrong with my head, as she said.”
He glanced back at the dining room where Claire was. What was this unknown feeling, and why was he so curious about what she was doing?
“Probably because I’m worried about what scheme she might be plotting to get a divorce.”
Cedric nodded and turned to leave.
But then he stopped in his tracks, recalling the small hand that had held his cheek. That small hand had felt quite warm.
‘Does she like animals?’
If she was lonely without friends, he could make some for her. He had no intention of divorcing her. That would never happen unless the Emperor allowed it.
“Your Highness!”
Cedric frowned at the large figure running towards him from afar. If it weren’t for this guy, none of this would have happened.
“It’s all your fault.”
“…Pardon?”
“So take responsibility.”
“Wh-What should I take responsibility for?”
“Anything.”
Kaven’s mouth dropped open. Take responsibility for anything? Could it be that His Highness saw him differently? As a knight, it was natural to protect his lord, but…
“I’m sorry! Your Highness, I prefer women! Please reconsider!”
“What are you talking about?”
“I don’t think I can take responsibility for everything about you. If you really want me, I will try. Although I am a knight who must protect you, if I must protect you in another sense…”
“Stop, stop. You’re seriously mistaken about something.”
Cedric’s expression turned cold.
Only then did Kaven look up and blink. His pupils shook violently when he met Cedric’s dry eyes.
“I was joking because you didn’t seem to be in a good mood.”
“It seemed sincere.”
Kaven shook his head vehemently, strongly denying it. Anyone could see it was a strong denial, but Cedric clicked his tongue and walked past him.
“Please, don’t get involved in anything from now on.”
“…Did you have a fight with the Grand Duchess?”
“Does it look that way?”
“The Grand Duchess doesn’t dislike you. That’s why I overstepped, hoping you two would get closer.”
“Don’t worry about unnecessary things. Go bring some animals from the forest.”
“Why animals all of a sudden… Understood! I’ll catch them immediately.”
“I’ll release them in the garden, so be careful not to hurt them.”
Kaven nodded with determination. Somehow, it seemed he had earned his lord’s displeasure.
