She knew Kallian was highly skilled in combat, but to see it first hand was always different. At first she wondered if they could really get past the heavy security.
But after careful observation of the surroundings, Kallian led Elliope effortlessly to the back of the office. The back of the office overlooked a low hill, making it a less frequented area.
He seemed to have calculated that few intruders would approach from that direction, as they would have to climb the hill to get in.
After assessing the situation, Kallian positioned Elliope a short distance away and kissed her hair gently.
“Wait here for a moment.”
Then he crouched down behind the bushes, picked up a small stone and threw it, hitting one of the guards. This drew some of them towards the bushes. Once he was sure they were out of sight of the other guards, he took them down easily and efficiently.
Clang!
“Ugh!”
“Ack!”
The thin metal armour of the guards crumpled like paper under Kallian’s heavy blows. Elliope’s eyes widened in shock.
With ruthless force, the guards instantly lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground.
His movements were swift, precise and without any unnecessary action – like a pure display of physical prowess in a circus act. He looked more like a killer than a knight.
Is he just naturally good at anything physical?
As this idle thought crossed her mind, she noticed Elliope approaching. That was when Kallian spoke.
“If possible, I’d prefer you didn’t watch.”
Hearing those words, she suddenly remembered the time in Zenya when Kallian had beheaded the spy Seor. Even then, he hadn’t wanted Elliope to witness such a thing.
“Compared to that, this is nothing more than a mild repression.”
But even now he seemed reluctant to let her witness anything violent. The thought made her fingertips curl slightly, but she had no intention of looking away. Strangely, she found herself fascinated by Kallian’s every move – how quickly he subdued his opponents, rendering them unconscious with precise, fluid movements.
“I told you not to watch.”
Despite his words, Kallian seemed quite pleased that Elliope couldn’t take her eyes off him.
“If you keep looking at me so intently, I might start expecting a reward.”
Only after making such a remark did he finish with the guards at the back of the residence. He gagged them, tied their bodies together and threw them into the bushes.
After confirming that no guards remained in the area, Kallian silently broke the lock on the back door of the residence. Without hesitation, he and Elliope entered.
The interior of the three-storey mansion was eerily quiet. Hardly any servants or maids were in sight.
‘Did the Ambassador… leave the residence?’
At that moment, Elliope tensed, worried that the ambassador might have escaped in the meantime.
“Hoo…”
A long sigh echoed from somewhere.
It was the voice of the person Elliope had been looking for.
Elliope did not hesitate and immediately moved towards the source of the sound. It was an instinctive action, driven by an unconscious trust that no matter what happened, Kallian, who was always at her side, would protect her.
“Is that you, Melburn? Bring me some more wine…”
“Sorry, I’m not a servant.”
With a low whisper, Kallian stepped in and subdued Ambassador Seor. His shirt collar was undone and a lit cigar rested between his lips, but before he could even scream, Kallian’s grip tightened around his throat.
“Ghk!”
The ambassador had no chance to scream out before he was thrown to the ground, struggling desperately.
“Kuh… ugh!”
“Shut up.”
“Urgh!”
The Ambassador writhed violently, showing no intention of going quietly.
“Ha.”
Kallian sighed in exasperation and without hesitation drew a dagger from the sheath strapped to his waist.
“Kallian…”
The moment Elliope flinched and called his name, bang! Kallian drove his dagger between the ambassador’s desperately struggling fingers.
“…….”
The blade trembled slightly where it rested between the man’s trembling fingers. It was so close that if it had been a little closer, his fingers could have been severed.
“Maybe next time I’ll just put it in the back of your hand.”
“Hup.”
“I don’t give second chances.”
Whichever way you heard it, the warning was undeniably sincere. Cold sweat trickled down the Ambassador’s pale forehead.
“I’m not here to kill you. How about we just talk?”
Still clutching his dagger, Kallian slowly removed his hand from the Ambassador’s throat. However, he remained in control, keeping one knee firmly pressed against the man’s back to prevent him from moving.
The ambassador gritted his teeth and let out a low growl.
“I have nothing to discuss with a mad dog like you! Just think of the mess you’ve made this time -“
“I’m not the one who wants to talk to you.”
With that, Kallian tapped the ambassador lightly on the cheek with the tip of his dagger.
Only then did the ambassador notice Elliope standing beside him. As their eyes met, his brow furrowed in surprise.
“Princess?”
“I am a viscountess now.”
With that, Elliope quietly removed her hood.
Seeing this, the ambassador let out a long, tired sigh, as if in disbelief.
“Well, well. The Princess of the Empire… and the wife of that mad do-no, Viscount Elsen, no less.”
After a moment to gauge Kallian’s reaction, the Ambassador adjusted his tone to be a little more respectful. But soon he began to grumble again.
“You could have simply requested a formal audience, but instead you chose to sneak in and intimidate people…”
“You were in Zenya.”
“……”
At Elliope’s words, Ambassador Seor tightened his mouth. For a while there was only silence.
After rolling his eyes a few times, Seor finally spoke again, his expression now calm, his face taking on a more languid expression.
Elliope’s expression was reminiscent of the first time she had entered the Duke’s estate in this life, when she had taunted Baron Taleon.
“Where is Zenya? I’ve never heard of it.”
“…….”
“I’m from Seor. I couldn’t possibly know a small village like Elsen, let alone one called Zenya.”
Just then there was a short cry.
“Ah!”
Kallian twisted the ambassador’s finger with an emotionless face.
“You crazy bastard!”
Elliope muttered quietly.
“You just called it a village, didn’t you? I was just talking about the name of the place.”
“……”
“How do you know if it’s a town or a small village?”
The ambassador, caught off guard, fell silent.
“I’m sure. You were definitely there.”
Instead of stopping Kallian, Elliope looked the ambassador straight in the eye. At least since Kallian was involved, this was not a situation where they could afford to back down.
“I heard your voice then.”
“……”
“You were with the man in the herbalist’s hut.”
“What are you going to do now, change your story?”
“You’re the one changing your story. You never mentioned that Illmo’s loyal dogs were here!”
“What about the spot disease then?”
“You deal with that problem. I didn’t spread it!”
As the conversation continued, Elliope remembered hearing this voice somewhere before. The sense of déjà vu she had felt earlier was strangely unsettling. Only now was she certain.
As she listened to the conversation, Elliope realised that the voice sounded familiar. The feeling of déjà vu she had experienced earlier returned, now more disturbing than before. She was sure now – the voice of the man speaking and arguing was the same as the voice of the ambassador who had complained to Theodor. A young man’s voice, a little deeper, but soft and not unpleasant to listen to.
“You spread the spot disease there, didn’t you?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about… Agh!”
Kallian twisted the ambassador’s fingers sharply once more, then continued, having long since abandoned any form of politeness.
“Come to think of it, one of my direct knights mentioned that they were missing a spy in Zenya.”
“……”
“Luckily, he threw his sword and managed to cut his back. He said it was a pretty deep cut.”
“So what? What does it matter?”
“Do you want to get out of here? Just looking at whether you have a wound or not should give us an answer”.
“How dare you treat an official ambassador this way!”
The ambassador exploded in anger.
Kallian drew another dagger and slashed the flat of the blade across the ambassador’s back. It wasn’t just his clothes that were torn, it felt as if the skin on his back was being torn away. The ambassador stiffened.
“Honestly, I don’t want to rip your clothes either.”
“Kuh!”
“If you’re going to take them off anyway…”
As he said this, Kallian held the dagger and slowly scanned Elliope. His gaze alone seemed capable of tearing her clothes to shreds. He ran his hand gently along the side of the dagger. It felt as if the cold edge of the blade would soon slide between her skin and fabric, ready to rip apart both her outer and inner garments. The sensation was terrifying.
Elliope flinched for a moment, but then remembered that this was no time for hesitation and continued to speak to the ambassador.
“There’s no point in pretending you don’t know.”
“What on earth are you talking about…?”
“Even if you deny it, the rumours will spread. They’ll say that Ambassador Seor spread the spot disease in Elsen.”
“……!”
“Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter to the angry people of Illmos. Especially not in this atmosphere.”
As she said this, Elliope lowered her eyes calmly. She could hear the ambassador swallow hastily.
“I came here today to tell you this.”
“Viscount Elsen’s wife.”
“If you had admitted it, we would have had something to discuss, but I guess that’s not going to happen now.”
It was the moment she turned her body, and Kallian slowly began to rise from his seat.
“You will regret this.”
The Ambassador gasped and added hastily.
Elliope deliberately slowed her pace, then stopped and asked,
“Why is that?”
“Cough, cough. I… I’m on your side.”
“This story seems strange.”
“……”
“The person who spread the plague in another territory is supposed to be on our side?”
The ambassador, still rubbing his neck as if it were stiff, slowly stood up.
“Cough… that’s… a misunderstanding.”
“A misunderstanding.”
“I didn’t go to spread it, I went to stop it.”
Elliope raised an eyebrow. After a moment’s hesitation, Seor added,
“It seems that this will take a while to explain.”
