She thought the least he could do, as his wife, was to visit her in hospital.
But not once, in the whole year that she lay unconscious, did he come to see her.
Only then did Regina truly understand – it was time to let go of this hopeless, one-sided love she had held onto for far too long.

“So you want to file for divorce. May I ask the reason?”
“Because I love you. And more than anything, I hoped – just a little – that you would love me back.”
“Love? How absurdly naive. You’re a married woman, yet you talk like a child. If you’re so lonely, why don’t you just buy a dog?”

The confession she had managed to make with what little courage she had left was mercilessly crushed by his cold reply.

She no longer had the strength to hold on to a marriage that was nothing more than a facade – nor the will to continue pretending it was real.

“Do you have any idea how much I’ve invested in you – in securing a future through your noble blood? Do you really think I’d let you go without getting something in return?”

His expression remained icy, but the heat in his hand as it gripped her shoulder and wrist betrayed something far more desperate.

“You love me, don’t you? No matter what you say – you can never leave me.”
