The duke’s daughter, Maude Hablein, who thinks of nothing but ways to make money, jumped into a wager with the emperor. The bet was simple: if she could bring the Grand Duke Kyle Rizewell to the founding ceremony, she would be the winner.
Contrary to expectations of difficulty, the wager ended smoothly. The victorious Maude was granted the emperor’s wealth and honor, while Kyle earned the title of Berren’s Masterpiece.
It was, without a doubt, a perfect ending. That is, until Kyle came to seek Maude of his own accord.
“How about a bet with me?”
Now standing tall as Berren’s most eligible bachelor, Kyle proposed his own wager.
“Lend me Lady Maude for just one year.”
He offered her a large bouquet of myrtle flowers, its ribbon fluttering with the rippling greenery.
“And what will you give me in return?”
Her reply was as bold as her expression.
“Anything.”
The woman smiled brightly, and Kyle decided he would use her—just enough, until he got what he wanted.
“I could even give myself to you.”
His voice, whispering and wrapping around her, was far too gentle.
“Lady Maude, you must take responsibility for me.”
And so began a suspicious wager with a mysterious man.
