“Does it disgust you to do this with me? Then you shouldn’t have begged me.”
Delilah had lost everything: her family, her title and her home.

This is the first ‘regret’ novel I actually finished to the end. I usually get so frustrated with the characters and the direction the author takes the plot, that I just give up. This story had exasperating elements too, but the prose was well written, even if the plot was lacking in some ways. It seems like the author devoted their entire heart and soul into making Delilah as miserable as possible. She truly was an unfortunate character, the result when parents thoroughly fail their children. She’s your typical weak and naive character who is frustrating at times, but she’s actually aware of her flaws and limitations, and despite her lack of power to change her situation, she’s very resilient. I deeply respect a character who refuses to give up on her life and her own pursuit of happiness. She displayed true inner strength, and even if I didn’t agree with all of choices, I understood them. I think that’s why I was able to keep reading until the end. The ML was selfish, petty, insufferable sociopath who uses his power and her desperation for survival to coerce her into a s*xual relationship. He’s deeply traumatized by his abusive childhood (they always are) and uses her as his emotional punching bag to validate his easily bruised ego and mental instability. He’s quite obsessed with Delilah and not in a romantic way. His actions are very much morally black. In fact, even towards the end I couldn’t truly support their reconciliation. He was just too evil. I do believe anyone can change, and I appreciate his effor to do so, but the author doesn’t spend allot of time on his reflection and growth. If you love a good regret and grovel arc, this story will let you down. The author just does a time skip, mind you this during the last ten chapters of the book. We experience Delilahs misery in such detail (there are no explicit s*x scenes), but the MLs “regret” is summarized and hinted at. I think Delilahs acceptance of him is very contrived and unimaginative. It’s like the author was rushing to end the story, and wrap everything up in a nice happy ending. For this story, it would have been better if they’d gone their separate ways at the end, even if forgiveness was on the table, reconciliation should not have been. I also never support the FL hiding her secret baby from the father, because a man deserves the opportunity to be a parent even if he’s a terrible partner or spouse. But in this case, I hesitated to support him even discovering his child. He was that insane. And his repentance was mostly ‘behind the scenes’. I’m not convinced he’s changed as the omniscient reader, so how in the world could Delilah be so convinced he has changed? If romance is not really your priority and instead want to read a psychological tragedy, this is a good read. It’s not a romance. It’s not a love story. It’s the story of a powerless young woman being held captive by an obsessed crown prince.
