I came to this world through some unknown force. Before arriving here, I was an ordinary office worker living the same repetitive daily life.
That day was no different from my usual commute home. The only difference was that it was raining, so there weren’t many people on the streets.
The night was dark and I could barely see ahead, but I was walking carefully. The moment I tried to cross the crosswalk, I couldn’t avoid a drunk driver’s car and got hit directly.
My body flew up and the world went black. When I came to, I was alive but couldn’t move my body.
‘Oh no, Seo-woo!’
I could hear my mother’s voice but couldn’t respond. I couldn’t move, seemingly paralyzed all over.
‘The hit-and-run driver died first, so how unfair is this? There’s no way to punish him now! You’re the only one suffering in this hospital.’
Only after hearing my mother’s words did I realize I was hospitalized after a traffic accident. And that I was currently in a vegetative state.
I kept drifting in and out of consciousness. My mother’s voice, filled with resentment, continued to ring in my ears.
I want to live a little longer. I don’t want to die like this…
That was my last thought. When I opened my eyes, it was a new world.
Recalling my final memory, I realized I had ultimately died in that hospital room. So at first, I thought this place was heaven.
“Oh! The saintess has arrived.”
People dressed in splendid clothes were all looking at me. They had the faces and attire of people from Western period dramas, and though they weren’t speaking Korean, I could understand what they were saying.
From the elaborate decorations and scale, I could tell this was an imperial palace.
But a saintess?
Would there be a saintess in heaven? Maybe this wasn’t heaven but a dream.
I pinched my cheeks several times, but nothing about the situation before me changed. What on earth was happening?
“Ohhh, light is emanating from her.”
While looking around with bewildered eyes, I followed everyone’s gaze to their hands.
When I looked down, I could see light coming from my hands too. It seemed to announce that I possessed some mystical power.
Why do I have this ability? Come to think of it…
Just before dying, I belatedly remembered meeting a god. I think I had lamented about why I had to die so unfairly.
The god apologized, saying I wasn’t supposed to die originally, and asked what wish I wanted granted.
My memory ended there. I couldn’t remember what wish I had made at all.
But looking at the current situation, I must have wished to be reborn in a new world with abilities.
A man’s voice suddenly broke through my momentary reverie. When I looked at him, he spoke to me with eyes full of expectation.
“Now finally our empire will have rain.”
“I’m not a saintess.”
“No, you are indeed a saintess. Light comes from your hands, doesn’t it? That proves you’re a saintess.”
“It’s just a coincidence.”
“No. You are a saintess. So how about helping us solve our urgent problems first?”
When I looked at the people with bewildered eyes, two women who appeared to be maids approached me. They stood on either side and grabbed my arms.
With a dazed expression, I stood up and was practically dragged away by them.
“Please come this way.”
The place they guided me to was clearly a sacred space at first glance. Even the atmosphere felt different. It gave off a pristine feeling that was both luminous and mystical.
While I looked around, they briefly explained the empire’s current situation.
They said the weather in this once spring-fragrant place had suddenly become dry. Rain hadn’t fallen for a long time, and drought had begun.
For over three years, rain had barely fallen at all. So they made every effort to bring rain, and while devising various methods, the Alpha Empire received a divine calling. God would send them a savior.
They seemed to think that saintess was me.
However, I didn’t consider myself a saintess. How could I call myself a saintess when I couldn’t do anything?
The situation I faced was so overwhelming that I had to tell the truth. That I wasn’t the saintess they were looking for.
I didn’t know why I had come here instead of the afterlife after dying, but I had to make it clear that I couldn’t fulfill what they wanted.
“I’m not a saintess. I don’t have any power.”
“Please show us your abilities.”
“Please, save our empire!”
No matter how much I pleaded, they wouldn’t listen to me. They only hoped I would quickly save the empire.
What could I show them when I couldn’t do anything?
In my previous life, I was an ordinary office worker—how could I demonstrate abilities? Since they were forcing me to do something I’d never done before, I could only look at the people around me with bewildered eyes.
Perhaps finding my appearance frustrating, a man who seemed to be a priest spoke to me.
“If the saintess offers prayers, God will release His anger.”
Just praying would be enough?
I had no power, but since light still came from my fingertips, they weren’t placing their hopes in me for nothing.
Hesitating, I clasped my hands together and prayed to a god whose existence I wasn’t even sure of. I asked for rain to fall, just like the people of this country hoped.
I was praying without much thought when scenes began flashing through my mind.
‘This year’s crops are ruined too.’
‘If rain doesn’t come like this, won’t we all be doomed?’
‘We don’t need an emperor who can’t help us.’
These were images of people filled with worry. Though I’d never seen them before, I could tell they were people from this world. Their expressions weren’t bright due to the continuing drought.
What’s this? Could I really be a saintess?
Though I found it strange, various scenes continued appearing in my mind like videos, so I had to keep concentrating.
‘At this rate, the empire will collapse within a few years.’
‘How are we supposed to come up with countermeasures!’
A priest shaking his head, saying there was no hope. And ministers pressing him.
‘Isn’t there some method? Come up with something!’
‘Well… it would be good if rain fell, but there’s no sign of it.’
‘Isn’t making it rain your role somehow?’
A middle-aged man in splendid robes, and men bowing their heads beneath him, struggling helplessly.
From the dignity I felt, I could tell this was the empire’s emperor. Among the people bowing their heads was someone who had been in front of me earlier.
According to their words, the empire’s situation was this:
Sweltering heat that began without warning. Natural disasters occurred because of it. The increasingly severe heat waves dried up the land, and drought made farming impossible even for those who wanted to work, since the land had become so barren.
Mountain fields that had once been lush with vegetation became desolate. Since they had no choice but to abandon cultivation, this led to great famine, creating the worst situation and seemingly crushing the empire’s people’s morale.
With nothing to eat, they pulled up trees and grass to stuff into their stomachs unconditionally, and some died after eating things that might have been poisonous without knowing. From the empire’s people’s perspective, life was hell itself.
Even worse, dormant monsters began awakening one by one to attack villages, further devastating the land.
The problem was that this extremely dire situation kept repeating.
So while I had started praying with a light heart, my feelings gradually became sincere. I felt sorry seeing children crying from hunger and people wailing from thirst when wells ran dry.
May they be able to smile. May there be no shortage of food and no more suffering from drought.
