Alec left Louise’s room after making sure she had fallen back asleep.
Even though he knew she was safe, he had been anxious since she hadn’t woken up, but now he felt a little more at ease.
No, in truth, his heart still hadn’t fully settled after that terrifying moment.
“To think Louise was attacked…”
The memory of that moment flashed vividly before his eyes, and Alec rubbed his face.
It was a great relief that he had been able to save her in time.
He had learned she was in danger only after returning to the mansion from the textile factory.
He had expected her to be resting at the mansion, but Louise had already left.
A letter from Marianne was placed on the table in her bedroom, and Alec, without thinking, had opened it.
But the contents were unusual.
“She wanted to meet alone?”
What could it be?
‘They said she had already left some time ago. Should I go pick her up? I hoped it was nothing serious, but I had an uneasy feeling.’
In the end, Alec, not wanting to take any chances, headed to where Louise had gone.
Since a carriage would be slow, he used his skill to move quickly.
But the situation he found there left him in shock.
His heart sank, and it felt like all the blood drained from his body.
The empress was collapsing to the floor, coughing up blood.
“I must have been… too weak. Let’s end this now… I can’t take it anymore.”
“No. I’m not… going to die… Agh!”
Louise’s agonized scream.
Every time Alec recalled that thin, sharp sound, it cut at his heart.
In a single move, he suppressed the empress’s power.
But his anger caused him to lose control for a moment, and the empress’s body flew across the room.
Alec pressed his left hand over his chest, as if to soothe the racing heart that had nearly burst from his chest.
What would have happened if Louise had truly been hurt?
It was too horrible a thought to even consider.
Just witnessing her in pain felt like his heart was being torn from its roots.
His dark eyes, already black, grew cold.
“Sir Cassdain.”
‘You called for me, master?’
Cassdain’s voice quickly returned in response to Alec’s summons.
Alec asked about something that seemed like it should be settled by now.
“Did you find the empress’s soul?”
Upon hearing of the empress’s death, Alec had immediately ordered Cassdain to retrieve her soul.
There was unfinished business, even though she was dead.
Cassdain, ever loyal, gave an answer that satisfied Alec.
‘Yes. I’ve been waiting with it.’
“Then let’s meet on the rooftop.”
‘Understood.’
Alec cut the connection and moved in an instant to the rooftop of the mansion.
The curtains on his room’s terrace fluttered in the wind, delayed by his swift departure.
From the roof, he looked down at the capital. Deep in the night, the houses were dark and asleep.
Soon, Cassdain appeared, his tattered cloak billowing in the cold air.
Beneath him, the pale empress knelt, her hands bound.
Her eyes, filled with utter shock, trembled as they locked onto Alec.
“D-Duke?”
Alec narrowed his eyes as he slowly observed the empress.
She trembled, unable to continue speaking, then suddenly glared at him fiercely.
“I knew something was suspicious! You hid your power well!”
Alec, withdrawing his gaze from the empress, sighed lightly and asked,
“How did you die? I let you live.”
“That’s none of your business! Let me go at once!”
“Well, you’ll be spilling your secrets to me soon enough.”
“What? What are you going to do to me…?!”
It seemed like the empress had shed the gentle and compassionate mask she once wore.
However, she still retained the dignity befitting an empress.
Alec revealed his intentions to her.
“I’m going to give you a life where even death won’t be the end.”
“W-What on earth…! Let me go! Why did you summon my soul?! I just want to die!”
She pleaded, almost in tears.
“It hurts too much. Please kill me again. I don’t want to live. If I don’t die, I’ll keep remembering… His eyes, his voice…”
“…”
“I want to forget. It’s so cold. Please, let me go. My heart feels like it’s being torn apart…”
The empress sobbed, her voice breaking as if she could hardly breathe.
But Alec didn’t waver at her plea.
“Didn’t I tell you? I won’t show mercy to anyone who harms my woman.”
“N-No! Aagh!”
The empress, her hands still bound, grabbed her head and screamed.
Would something unexpected happen again, putting Louise in danger?
Alec checked the empress’s background one more time.
It mentioned that she had truly loved the emperor.
But the emperor never cared about her feelings.
In the original story, after the empress died from illness, the emperor didn’t even have time to take another empress before he tore the empire apart.
The fact that the empress received her power from the emperor wasn’t a part of the original novel.
This showed how unimportant it was to Aksen.
“I’ll turn you into something else. You’ll be more loyal to me than you ever were to the emperor.”
“W-What?”
“Who knows? If you protect Louise a thousand times, I might change my mind and release you. I don’t like keeping anyone around who tried to kill my woman.”
“W-What are you talking about… No! Why should I protect that woman? I refuse!”
The horrified empress tried to back away from him.
Her death had come much earlier than in the original.
In any case, soon enough, she would be reborn with a new identity, completely obedient to him and Louise.
He could also share everything that had happened with the emperor before disposing of her again.
Regardless, Alec took another step toward the empress and spoke a low incantation.
“Become my servant.”
“…Aaaaagh!”
