I feel… Underwhelmed. I’m not truely convinced of the characters and romance. Maybe it’s because I read it all in a day but the turnaround for her finding out the truth being upset then forgiving him felt too sudden.
Also it feels like the ml and son never listen to her and are taking advantage of her ‘womanly compassion’, she says “leave I don’t want to see you” and he replies “I’ll be back tomorrow”. And later all is forgiven (only for him) when he gets injured and his self destruction garners her attention.
I felt like fl mum was incredibly sympathetic and I dislike the way that it was handled. Fl never learns the world her mother ruined herself in to ensure that her beautiful daughter could be spared. And they don’t really talk about what her own mother went through when she ‘died’.

I agree. It left a bad taste in my mouth that redemption was only really given to the person who orchestrated all the pain she went through. Even the “redemption” of the worst character felt cheap to me because it didn’t seem like he actually learned anything. After finding her again, he manipulated her right back into his arms…only this time it was with warm smiles instead of humiliation and insults.
These kinds of stories are a guilty pleasure of mine because I think it’s interesting to see the psychology behind characters like the ML, especially when they eventually recognize the harm they’ve caused and learn to respect the FL’s autonomy, even if that means letting her go. And usually after letting her go it’s satisfying to see her have the choice to go back. But in this case, he selfishly kept her by his side until she broke, and even after everything that happened, he still learned nothing and continued to keep her there.
Before she tried to off herself, the ML said he would make the birdcage so beautiful that she wouldn’t realize it was a prison. As far as I see it, that’s exactly what he achieved in the end.
That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad story, though. If anything, I think there’s something to be said for a story that can leave such a bad taste in your mouth while still giving you this much to think and talk about afterward. Whether the ending was meant to be viewed as a genuine redemption or as him finally succeeding in creating that beautiful birdcage is something readers can actually debate, and I think that makes the story more interesting.
